Color figure

another piece from figure drawing class.  This one is done using pastels on charcoal paper.  40 minute pose.  I wish I had more time on the furniture.

Landscape painting: WIP

Went to the beach today for a landscape painting.  This was pretty fun but somewhat tiring.  Painting can be mentally exhausting sometimes when you're trying to figure out those very subtle colors and how to balance them throughout the piece.  Still a work in progress, but I'm liking how it's looking.

Jerry Gonzalez: Jazz Musician

Done in mixed media over illustration board.  There are different layers to this one.  First layer is a simple graphite pencil drawing.  Workable fixative is then sprayed over it.  Afterwards, a layer of burnt sienna oil paint which is rubbed throughout the whole piece.  The lights are then rubbed off with an eraser, and then finished with color pencil.

Please excuse the lighting in this photo, I will try to post another one.

Portrait

My most recent work for figure class.  Portrait done with charcoal pencil, white charcoal pencil and cante on toned paper.  I had a lot of fun with this one.

Portrait paper cutout

A portrait from one of my classmates.  I made a first drawing on my sketchbook, where I would have a better sense of dark and light values.  I would then simplify the form so that a single shadow goes along the whole piece.  The final result is a single sheet of black paper cut using an Xacto knife blade to bring out the light value.  All the black is one single shape (everything is connected).  The white you see is actually a sheet of bristol board beneath the actual piece for presentation purposes.  The spectator is actually seeing through the piece.

Black and white figure on toned paper.

This was done using black cante, charcoal pencil and white charcoal pencil on a toned paper.

Final: Fish Drawing

I got my pen and ink fish drawing back.  I'm quite happy with how it turned out.
